![]() ![]() It is interesting to note that previously these versions of Persona 3 and Persona 4 were released on various handheld consoles PlayStation, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, respectively. Apart from emulators, there was virtually no other way to access these versions other than to purchase a PlayStation Vita and download both versions. ![]() Just my opinion.Pre-orders for Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden begin today, with a final release date of January 19, 2023. Each game will also be available separately for $19.99. You can watch the brand new trailer for this announcement below.īoth games feature various quality-of-life improvements, including different difficulty options and a handy new Suspend Save feature (think of the Quick Save feature in the various Nintendo DS ports of Final Fantasy). ![]() While this works in P4 and P5 as those games were not built around AI party members, stripping away tactics in favor of direct commands makes P3's combat far less interesting. P3P removes this in favor of direct commands to make it play more like P4 despite P3's combat being built around issuing tactics to AI controlled party members. It's important to utilize tactics during combat to avoid a lot of frustration with the AI. The tactics menu is more in depth in P3 compared to how vanilla it is in subsequent games. The AI controlled party members bring a different dynamic to combat that P4 and P5 just do not offer. P3P is best experienced for people who already know the story and want to see a slightly different take on it with the FeMC route.Īlso, I might be in the minority here but I actually enjoy the combat in the original P3 and P3Fes. Cutscenes are instead replaced with static backgrounds and character portraits. The little character animations during cutscenes add so much personality, and those are completely missing in P3P. So much of the story gets lost in the visual novel format. I can't recommend P3P if it's your first time experiencing the game. Just go in knowing that it's a compromised experience in several ways. But if you're really excited to play P3 and the only version you can do is P3P, it's better to experience that version than never experience the game at all. Ideally, I'd recommend FES or Reload first and then P3P on a replay. And Reload isn't going to change this debate because it's going to be missing both the FES and P3P content so it's really just going to be another version to enter the debate. But there's also just as many QOL additions that I miss going back to FES. Not all of them work and the game ends up kind of too streamlined for me and the balance is thrown completely off. Now, I think some of those changes are hit or miss. ![]() And beyond that, P3P also backports a lot of improvements and changes to the series that P4 started. It's just as cool to have as the expansion FES has imo. However, P3P also has the Female Main Character, which is a huge deal for a Persona game and should not be ignored. So for presentation and gameplay, I think FES is better. In addition, P3P is lacking the major content expansion that FES has. Character models are removed from cutscenes and overworld, turning the game into more a visual novel than ever before, and there's some big story moments that lack the impact of the PS2 original because of this. FES vs P3P is always going to be an ongoing debate. ![]()
